Jenny explains Marketing Sciences’ ‘Trees to Tablets’ environmental initiative and why we have won a Green Apple Award…
Marketing Sciences are delighted to announce that our ‘Trees to Tablets’ initiative has been chosen as a Winner of the International Green Apple Awards 2014 for Environmental Best Practice, after competing with over 500 other nominations.
What exactly is our ‘Trees to Tablets’ initiative? We typically conduct around 1 million face to face market research interviews a year, many of which are administered either in consumers’ homes, on the high street, in halls or in shops. Up until May 2012, all of these face-to-face interviews were recorded using pen and paper, until we set up our ‘Trees to Tablets’ initiative. This project involved equipping our field force of 380 interviewers with electronic tablets containing downloadable electronic questionnaires to replace the millions of paper questionnaires we had previously been using.
We’re very proud of our initiative and winning a Green Apple Award is the icing on the cake! The key achievements of our Trees to Tablets initiative have been:
- Increasing profit margins – A big saving has been made on postage, paper and people’s time since the initiative began 2 years ago. Despite a significant investment in electronic tablets, this has already proved to be a highly profitable venture.
- Significantly reducing our company’s carbon footprint – 805 trees (or 34 metric tons of paper) have been saved over the past 2 years. We expect to continue saving at least 400 trees (or 16 metric tons) of paper each year.
- Improving efficiency, quality and speed of research – As paper questionnaires no longer need to be posted to interviewers, completed, returned and then manually typed up, we are shaving an average of 5 working days off our project timelines. Our data is also more accurate as the data collection process is more controlled. This has resulted in more satisfied clients due to faster turnaround projects time and better quality research.
In addition to our core aims, our success with the Trees to Tablet initiative has also inspired us to set up a Marketing Sciences ‘Green Team’, whose primary objective is to further reduce the environmental impact of our business.
The Green Apple awards were launched in 1994 and are well established as one of the world’s foremost environment awards campaigns. The awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. The Green Apple Awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
Now we’re looking forward to attending the Green Apple Awards presentation ceremony in London at The Houses of Parliament on 10th November where we will be presented with a trophy and certificate. The Green Apple Award will even be presented by Miss UK Green Queen!
Congratulations to everyone in Marketing Sciences who was involved in the award-winning initiative. We are always looking at other ways to reduce our carbon footprint so if you have any suggestions, please get in touch!
