Top Tips for Completing the MRS Advanced Certificate

Here at Marketing Sciences Unlimited, training is essential for all of our employees. We will soon be kicking off the next round of MRS Advanced Certificate training and examination with our next generation of market researchers. So we thought now would be a good time to share some tips for success:

LEARN FROM OTHERS AROUND YOU

Run your assessment ideas and drafts past senior colleagues, and don’t be afraid to ask them for their take on key methodology – as long as they aren’t writing it for you! It’s worth making the most of their expertise and experience, within the market research industry, and also with completing the certificate (as many will have done so!).

READ THE SET TEXT BOOK

The key text book for the Advanced Certificate is “The Practice of Market Research: An Introduction” by Yvonne McGivern. Reading through the text books can help with learning the detail and the tasks can aid revision.

KEEP IT RELEVANT, PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS

When picking an idea for the assessment, try to make it as relevant to your area of research/business as possible so that you can apply the knowledge you already have.

DON’T FORGET THE CODE

Remember to refer to the MRS code of conduct, as it is essential that the market research industry follows the rules.

DON’T GET CAUGHT UP ON THE METHOD

As long as you can justify the method you have chosen and demonstrate how it can answer the brief, the actual method itself is less important (although you do still need to explain it).

WORD COUNT

You are limited by a word count on your integrated assignment, so it is essential that you are concise and focused. Have a plan for how long each section should be, and make sure you leave enough time for revisions.

PROOF READ

Try to leave yourself enough time to read through your assessment and ask a peer too.

USE PRACTICE PAPERS

For the exam have a practice first and use the past papers & answer guides to aid revision. These will gives you an idea of the answers they are looking for, and also prepare you for the style of questions asked.

ARRIVE EARLY

As with all exams, leave with plenty of time so you don’t have to rush in.

TALK TO OTHERS

As well as talking to senior members of staff, talk to your peers sitting the exam. Talk through the topics together, as it is likely you will have picked up on different information.

Have you completed the MRS Advanced Certificate? Do you have any advice you would like to share?

Good luck if you’re taking the MRS Advanced Certificate soon!
